LONG BEACH, CA – Exhibit [A] Gallery brings international watercolor artists to Downtown Long Beach.  The gallery located at 555 N. Pine in Downtown Long Beach will feature a solo exhibition by Thomas Schaller as well as a three-day workshop by Paul Jackson.

Thomas Schaller has long been considered one of the foremost architectural illustrators in the world.  He has authored two books: the best-selling, and AIA award of merit winner, Architecture in Watercolor, and The Art of Architectural Drawing. His artwork has been exhibited around the world including at the Art Institute of Chicago, The Graham Foundation, The American Society of Illustrators in New York City and at the Aedes-East Gallery in Berlin.

Schaller will be featured in the upcoming “Artists to Watch” issue of Watercolor Artist magazine in October 2010, as well as feature articles in American Artist and American Art Collector magazines.  Recent works have been juried into numerous prestigious exhibitions including the World Expo’s Shanghai Zhujiajiao International Watercolor Biennial Exhibition, the 30th International Exhibition of the San Diego Watercolor Society and the 143rd Annual International Exhibition of the American Watercolor Society.

The show, including recent works of Southern California beach life, will open at Exhibit [A] Gallery on Friday July 2nd with a reception from 6-10pm as well as a closing reception on Saturday July 31st from 6-10pm.

During the exhibition, renowned watercolor artist Paul Jackson will host a three-day watercolor workshop entitled, “A Dramatic Landscape”.  Paul is the author of Painting Spectacular Light Effects in Watercolor. His work has often been featured in the International Artist and The Artist's Magazine. He is a signature member of the American Watercolor Society (AWS) and National Watercolor Society (NWS).

The workshop will allow attendees to reach the next level of artistic confidence and ability, regarding design, color, value, textures and patterns. Using informal lectures, discussions, demonstrations and critiques, artists will develop or refine their personal painting style and find logical, creative answers to watercolor questions and problems.  The three day workshop is on July 16th – 18th from 9am – 3pm, cost: $300.  To register, contact, Debbie Lewis at 562-436-4543 or debbieellen.lewis@gmail.com.  Open to all skill levels.

The Exhibit [A] gallery is part of an economic development project funded by the Downtown Long Beach Associates.  As one of the Vayden Roi Galleries, headed by Evan Kelly and Liza Mitchell, the project transforms vacant commercial spaces into active galleries and event venues.  The program, which was initiated in January of 2010, has already seen success.  The initial location at 517 Pine Avenue was an abandoned Hookah Lounge.  After five months of programming, the space was leased by a yoga and natural health studio whose owners had attended one of the events.  Local residents have also expressed their delight with the program, “There is finally a gallery on Pine Avenue!” says Rajh Kirch who lives at 519 Pine Avenue along with hundreds of other Pine Avenue residents living in recently constructed apartment complexes and high end lofts.  The project recently moved into the 555 Pine location and is looking for more spaces to build temporary galleries.  For inquires or more information, please contact Evan Kelly: Evan@vaydenroi.com or Liza Mitchell: Liza@vaydenroi.com

MSF provides independent, impartial assistance to those most in need. In 1999, Doctors Without Borders received the Nobel Peace Prize.

After enduring delays in receiving urgent medical supplies and equipment, as well as continuous aftershocks that threatened already-damaged facilities, MSF staff are now treating patients inside an inflatable hospital in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.  http://doctorswithoutborders.org/news/article.cfm?id=4238&cat=field-news&ref=home-center-relatedlink

Do You Love Your Home? Celebrate with a Watercolor House Portrait

What better way to celebrate the home you love with a watercolor house portrait.

If you are not familiar with house portraits, let me tell you about them.

I find that people with beautiful homes like to keep them looking beautiful with aesthetic landscaping and possibly other decorative touches placed around the house, such as fountains, figurines and other fun objects -- or simply lush plants and trees. In fact, I consider such people to be artists themselves, as they are creating a beautiful image to be enjoyed by everyone who passes by their home.

Because they live on the inside of the home, they don't get to see the beautiful outside very often or for very long -- only when they enter their home.

However, if they want to enjoy their beautiful home while they are inside, day in and day out, they typically choose to commission an artist whose work they admire to do a custom house portrait for them.

The artist will usually take photographs or receive photographs from the home-owner which depict the home in the best light, with nice contrast and shadows, and which show off the house and landscape details to their best.

What is so great about commissioned paintings is that the artist can add or subtract elements that will enhance the painting. For example, if there happens to be an ugly telephone pole in front of the house, this can be excluded from the painting. Or if the photograph was taken during the winter and the home really looks best in the spring with flowers all in bloom, the artist can paint the flowers in bloom, even though they may not exist in the winter photo. This is what is called "artistic license". An artist creates a reality of his own!

If you are considering commissioning a painting of your home, make sure to discuss the details with the artist before you give him a deposit. Also make sure he/she will guarantee your satisfaction. That is key -- if you are not happy with the painting, the artist should agree to fix or re-do it until you are -- within reason, of course. (If you agree on a spring scene and change your mind later, you might need to pay extra to make major changes.)

Find an artist whose work you like so that you know what medium he will work in and are happy with his style of painting.

I love working with home-owners on their house portraits and seeing their beaming faces when I show them the portrait of their home I have created. There is no better feeling than that of creating a warm glow in someone's heart that I know will last forever! I also provide 2 free watercolor greeting cards with their house portrait on the outside so they can show off their new acquisition to friends and family.
